No. 14 — Artist Talk: Ally

Ally and I mostly discuss what makes us not smile: people undervaluing makers' handmade goods

Ally runs Chebs & Co., where she makes knitted and crocheted creations. She is selling her work at The SMILE Market, which you can check out here.

What makes you smile?

🎨 People being able to appreciate the effort put into her craft.

What makes you not smile?

💸 People not appreciating her craft, only seeing price tags.

Ally: You know, I've found with a lot of my maker friends, they undervalue their work; they are not charging enough for their handmade items already.

And when somebody [at a market] asks you for a discount, I mean, you don't go to Target and go to the cashier and say, “can I get a discount on this shirt?”, you just kind of pay what it is.

I don't understand why we, and when I say “we” I mean collectively all of us, are used to the consumerism of not saying can I discount something at a store, but we want to ask our friends and family to make items, or even just people that we see at small markets [we’ll be] like, “I'll give you five bucks for this.” And it's like, no that's not how it works.
